Three Key Attributes Necessary to Lose Weight by Laura Brand In order to succeed in your endeavor to lose weight and get fit, it takes more than just a good workout program. It even takes more than a good nutritional program. What, you say, could be more than that?? Before you get too discouraged, let me tell you the secret... HABITS. Your habits will either guarantee success or failure - not just in fitness - but in life. In The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey states that in order to change a habit, you must have the knowledge, the skill, and the desire to change. You must possess all three of these characteristics in order for behavior change to occur. In terms of weight loss, it is not enough to simply want it; you must also know how to do it properly and have the skill to carry it out. This is part of my mission as a personal trainer: to provide the knowledge and the skills necessary to maintain a lifetime of health, fitness, and weight control. However, I can’t make anybody want it. That desire must come from within and must be fueled with passionate effort. When you decide that you really want it, you must then BELIEVE that you can do it. If you still host doubts in your mind regarding your ability to succeed, then the chances are high that you will fail. If, however, you believe that you CAN DO IT, and stubbornly refuse any negative thinking, then the chances are high that you will succeed. This is true in just about every area in life – not just in weight loss. It is also true that when you DO succeed in accomplishing your weight loss goals, then that will give you greater confidence to accomplish even more goals in other areas of your life. Will you succeed or will you fail? You decide. |
