Thanksgiving Tips

I hope you all had a nice Halloween!  As I heard on the radio station this morning, yesterday marks the beginning of “Feasting Season” which lasts from now until at least New Year’s Day, but often all the way until Valentine’s Day!!!  It never ceases to amaze me how our American culture continues to find more reasons and opportunities to PIG OUT!!!  For those of us who are trying to lead a healthy lifestyle, this time of year can become very challenging, to say the least.  So, for this reason, I offer you these tips that will hopefully help you to navigate through the next few months without too many unnecessary pitfalls.

  • Wear tight-fitting clothing.  Most people prefer to wear clothes that will allow some “breathing room” on Thanksgiving Day to allow for over-eating.  This little tip will help prevent you from overindulging, because if your stomach begins to bulge from too much food, it will signal for you to stop eating!
  • If there is a buffet at your get-together, only choose 2 or 3 of your absolute favorite things, and then walk away!
  • Keep your portion sizes small.
  • Don’t skip breakfast.  It is a bad idea to skip meals in order to “save up” for the big meal, because it will cause a drop in blood sugar which often causes cravings for simple and refined carbohydrates, overeating, and irritability (which you DEFINITELY don’t want to be on Thanksgiving day!!).
  • For every glass of alcohol or caffeinated beverage, drink one glass of water.  Since both of these are diuretics, you will need to replenish the water you lose through urination.  Also, alcohol has many empty calories, so drinking water in between alcoholic drinks will help reduce the amount of calories you consume through alcohol.

Good luck, and have a very Happy and safe Thanksgiving!!
